Fate and Free Will

The issue of Fate and Free Will has come up again. So many people go to psychics to have their future told to them, then because they believe what they are told, go out and proceed to make it happen as foretold. If what they are told is good, no harm is done, but if they are told that something bad will happen, and they make it happen, I believe the "psychic" bears responsibility and has incurred a karmic debt . I also believe that we need to take responsibility for our own lives and make our own choices. It is the only way we are going to grow and mature as spiritually awakened beings.

I am reposting a small article I wrote a while ago about fate and free will under the heading "The Path"

We come into this life with a path set before birth. This path is chosen for what we need to learn, what we need to do in this lifetime. This does not mean that The Fates rule our lives. It simply means that we are born with a road map, preserving free choice within that map.

Our choices before each birth determine our geographical location, family into which we will be born and the time of our entry to the world. We could not be born to Native American parents in Canada and through choice, become African-Americans in Egypt, however we can make choices during our lifetime that would take us from Canada to Egypt. We would still be Native-American Canadians, born of Native American Canadian parents.

Our early lives are governed by our pre-birth choices, but as we get older and start to make conscious choices, our road map is laid out in front of us. Each choice we make can change the course of our lives on that map.

Part of our journey as Soul is to find our way around the globe of God. We may have to sail mysterious waters at times, but it is invigorating and enlightening to chart our own course. Our itinerary is already laid out for us, all we have to do is enjoy the adventure.

Zareba, people don't realise that things would come to a stand still if we know our future. nothing would work, no trains no buses no traffic on the road.
We live in hope that tomorrow would be better than today, hope is behind all our activities.. some one grows food for his better tomorrow. He contributes for our survival and we contribute to his.

Beautiful and thought provoking post Zareba. Fortune telling is a thriving business here India

yes you grow, mature, and choose yourself, we are greater than the stars, greater than the 'readings', Life is real, not a 'script', not 'theatre'.

I once did horoscopes, 1000s of em, learned a lot, learned that I did not want the responsibility for other peoples lives, not like that. There is a fine line there.

I don't remember (or intuit) a choice before birth selecting Minneapolis as a possible origin! I have always questioned predestination, believing instead that this is a random life with choices seldom determining outcomes.
Perhaps there are tendencies to behaviors but for the most part things happen. This is a good thing! Imagine that life were predictable and we knew what was going to happen next; what a bore. I prefer a surprise and am never disappointed.
Peace

Thanks Rauf. If we knew the details of our future, there would be no point in doing anything. Like you, I am very glad for the free will part of our lives. ...Z

Hi Jim. Thank you for your comments and your honesty. I fully agree with not wanting to be resoposible for others lives by predicting things they may make happen. To interfere in that way in another's life is to incur karmic debt that I do not want to incur.

Goatman, I don't remember chosing this particular life either, but I suspect that if we remembered much from the other side, it would make it impossible to learn what we must. Since each of us carries the spark of divinity within us, we would be privy to all secrets, all knowledge and would have no further use for this life or this world. I tend to believe that we are the senses by which the Cosmos experiences itself. ...Z

I was never into my future being told. I believe in Karma.

Its our choices that make or break our life. And ultimately our responsibility.

We, only we, are responsible for our own actions, not some planet, star, sun or moon!

BTW, I am glad I am here too. Thanks for the visit. You can chk out my poetry blog rooted

You write with confidence about pre-birth. It is something I've pondered quite often but I accept it as a possibility since I have no way of *knowing*. If there is a way to know, it hasn't found me yet. :)

My question is how are you so sure?

Hi AbNorMal: I think the confidence comes from a couple of things, first...I seem to have been passing back and forth through the mirror altogether too many times and have found nothing to change my belief....and second...It has been my experience that when I remember a truth, there is no doubt in my mind, it simply IS. This particular truth explains so many things that have happened in my life.

As you find your own particular truths you will recognize them with that same certainty, and you will find them because you ask the questions and you seek the answers.

The Spark of Divinity that lives within us all will not allow us to consciously recognize our truths until we are ready for them. That sometimes causes confusion because we try so hard to learn, to grow and to become enlightened that when we feel we are not making progress, we may be inclined to give up.

My takeaway is this: Everyone realizes their own truth. And with that, I completely agree. Thanks for the enlightened response! :)
